Australians cherish time spent with family and friends, yet new findings indicate many miss out on these crucial interactions that foster support and connection. TAL's Understanding Modern Australia Report reveals a significant appreciation for personal connections, but daily challenges such as exhaustion, stress, and financial constraints often lead to missed opportunities to engage socially.

Glenn Baird, Head of Mental Health at TAL, emphasized that fostering relationships should be regarded as an essential aspect of wellbeing. He noted that while over 70% of Australians manage to find time for activities that enhance their mental health, many feel they lack the resources or time for meaningful social interactions. Baird affirmed the importance of simple gestures, stating that accepting or extending invitations can significantly impact one's emotional state.
A separate TAL survey indicates that fatigue is the primary reason for cancelling social plans, cited by 37% of respondents. Other reasons include feeling disinclined to go out (35%) and needing solitary time (26%). Women, at 45%, are especially affected by fatigue compared to 28% of men. Financial constraints also play a role, with 20% of respondents cancelling plans due to costs.
The survey further suggests that more straightforward, lower-pressure arrangements encourage attendance at social events. Proximity (54%), timing (47%), and cost-free options (45%) are key factors in facilitating social interactions.
With 45% of Australians looking to close friends for mood elevation, ahead of partners and family, the significance of friendships is clear. This trend varies across age groups; young adults aged 18-24 predominantly seek support from friends, while older demographics balance their sources of support among partners, family, and friends.
Baird stated that frequent social contact correlates with enhanced overall health, particularly in mental health. He advised practical strategies for cultivating connections, such as accepting small social invites, ensuring invitations are convenient, and establishing regular communication habits.
In alignment with the theme of 'Together We Thrive' for Mental Health Month, TAL is promoting activities to encourage connection, including a giveaway of free tickets to AFLW games throughout October, urging Australians to invite friends or family to join them. TAL's commitment reflects a broader mission to address mental health challenges through enhanced social support.
