Recent research from Florida Atlantic University indicates that men who consume higher amounts of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) have a 24% to 34% increased risk of developing prostate cancer when compared to those who eat less.

Ultra-processed foods, which comprise nearly 60% of adults’ and 70% of children’s energy intake in the United States, include items like soft drinks, packaged cereals, processed snacks, and meats. These products are typically made with refined ingredients and additives that enhance taste, texture, and shelf life but reduce nutritional value.

Emerging evidence suggests that high consumption of UPFs is associated with various health issues. Researchers have identified biological pathways that may link UPFs to cancer, such as metabolic disruption and inflammation. Despite this, data on their specific impact on prostate cancer risk had been limited prior to this study.

The study, published in The American Journal of Medicine, analyzed data from 17,024 men aged 18 and older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2003 and 2023. Through two 24-hour dietary recalls, researchers assessed the percentage of daily calories derived from UPFs, categorizing participants based on their intake.

Men in the three higher UPF consumption categories faced a 29% increase in prostate cancer risk, while the top two groups experienced a 30% higher risk compared to the lowest consumption group. After accounting for factors such as age, race, and smoking status, the increased risk persisted, showing an increase ranging from 24% to 31%. Although men with the highest UPF intake had a potential 34% higher risk, this finding was not statistically significant due to a smaller number of cancer cases in that group.

Charles H. Hennekens, the study's senior author and a professor at Florida Atlantic University, emphasized the significance of these findings in highlighting the potential adverse health effects of UPFs. He remarked that the results call for further large-scale observational studies and randomized trials to validate these conclusions.

Previous studies have linked high UPF consumption to obesity, metabolic diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and premature deaths. The authors of the study argue that just as the dangers of tobacco exposure necessitated a long-term response, the risks associated with UPFs will require similar public health initiatives.

Timothy De Ver Dye, co-author and chair of the Department of Population Health at Florida Atlantic University, acknowledged the complexities involved in reducing UPF consumption. He pointed out that many individuals face obstacles in accessing healthy food options, suggesting that solutions must encompass both personal and systemic approaches to promoting nutritious foods.

The American Cancer Society projects that over 333,000 men in the U.S. will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2026, with more than 36,000 likely to succumb to the disease. On a global scale, nearly 1.5 million men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022, resulting in approximately 400,000 deaths.

Hennekens urged healthcare providers to encourage patients to adopt healthier lifestyles and reduce their intake of ultra-processed foods, highlighting the importance of this finding in broader public health discussions.
