The State Fair of Texas is known for its popular food offerings, but enjoying these treats doesn't have to compromise a healthy diet, according to Denice Taylor, a registered dietitian with Texas Health Arlington. Speaking with KERA's Sam Baker, she emphasized the importance of portion control and planning.
Taylor advised attendees to avoid super-sized foods and suggested researching menu options online before the fair. She noted that healthier alternatives, such as smaller portions from cooking demonstrations, may be available indoors.
When it comes to sampling food from vendors, Taylor recommended sharing with companions. By using extra forks and small plates, fairgoers can try a variety of foods without overindulging.
Eating a snack or meal before attending the fair is another strategy that Taylor endorsed. "You’ll feel less hungry and won’t be as tempted to overindulge," she said. Additionally, visiting the fair earlier in the day can help attendees manage their diets effectively, as they tend to control their eating habits better in the morning or early afternoon.
Taylor also highlighted the fair's extensive walking opportunities. She suggested picking up a map to locate favorite food items and walking to the farthest spots to increase step counts. Notably, it takes approximately 9,000 steps to walk off an average corny dog.
Finally, Taylor cautioned against high-calorie beverages and recommended bringing a refillable water bottle to save both calories and money. She encouraged participants to maintain their healthy eating habits and get back on track the following day if they stray during the fair.
