Insomnia is a common condition that can significantly disrupt daily life. Homeopathy has been suggested as a complementary option for treating insomnia, though its efficacy is still debated. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of homeopathic treatments for insomnia.

The review included comparative studies that assessed any homeopathic preparations for insomnia, surveying prominent medical databases and trial registries up to August 2025. The researchers evaluated factors such as risk of bias and intervention complexity using recognized assessment tools. Results were synthesized through random-effects meta-analyses, and the certainty of evidence was assessed with GRADE.
A total of eight randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 364 adult participants and four non-randomized studies involving 517 participants met the inclusion criteria. For adults, one RCT reported a mean difference (MD) of -2.6 points (95% CI -5.5 to 0.26) in sleep quality, suggesting low certainty. Another RCT indicated insomnia severity improvement with an MD of -3.2 points (95% CI -5.68 to -0.72) at moderate certainty. Total sleep time showed a pooled MD of 0.65 hours (95% CI -0.9 to 2.2) from three RCTs, also at low certainty. In children, one open-label trial indicated a potential difference in insomnia severity, but the evidence was rated very low in certainty. Adverse events were infrequently reported, yielding low certainty regarding safety.
Overall, the findings emphasize that the available evidence is limited by imprecision and bias, hindering strong conclusions on homeopathic treatments for insomnia. The authors recommend that more rigorous studies, with systematic monitoring for adverse events, are required to draw clearer outcomes regarding the effectiveness and safety of homeopathy in insomnia treatment.
