Bear’s BBQ is participating in the Hartford Marathon this year to raise funds for mental health initiatives. Co-owner Cheryl Antoncic Seuss will run her first half marathon on her 50th birthday. "This is a new challenge for me for sure," she said, sharing that she has lost three individuals to suicide, including a former assistant manager named Sean.

Seuss explained that her experiences, both personally and professionally, have inspired her to advocate for mental health. "There’s been a lot of situations that have come up that have really motivated me to help raise awareness around mental health," she said. She emphasized the goal is not only to raise awareness but to provide actionable support, including tools and resources.
Bear’s BBQ aims to raise $50,000 to fund mental health training for restaurant staff across Connecticut. Chief Marketing Experience Officer Cassie Therriault noted that the raised funds will be used for accredited courses that educate staff on recognizing warning signs of mental health struggles. "We’re not by any means providing mental health services, but we’re providing education and connection to resources with people that can help them," she explained.
Therriault also highlighted the importance of creating a supportive environment within the restaurant community. "It’s really hard to ask for help, and we want all staff members to feel they can turn to trained personnel without stigma or judgment, because they care about your well-being as a person and an employee."
Seuss expressed gratitude for those who have joined their cause, stating, "I want to be able to thank them—not just on my behalf, but on behalf of the people who have been impacted and those we aim to help in a positive way."
Bear’s BBQ has been selected as one of the official charities for this year’s Hartford Marathon, which coincides with World Mental Health Day. The Hartford Marathon Foundation has raised over $9.5 million in the past two decades for community support. For more information on the marathon or to participate, visit their website.
