A study suggests that decreasing the intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) could prevent thousands of deaths related to heart disease. In the UK and US, UPFs now make up more than half of the average diet, with some individuals, particularly younger people or those from disadvantaged backgrounds, consuming diets that are up to 80% made up of UPFs. Previous research has linked UPFs to serious health issues affecting all major organ systems.

The findings of this study were published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and presented at the annual International Congress on Obesity, hosted by the World Obesity Federation in Mexico. Led by Virginie Hamel and Jean-Claude Moubarac from the Center for Public Health Research at Montreal University, the study focused on Canada and estimated that thousands of lives could be saved if there were reductions in UPF consumption. However, the researchers noted that similar trends could likely be observed in other high-income nations.

The researchers indicated that UPFs stand as a significant and preventable cause of heart disease, emphasizing the importance of public health interventions aimed at lowering UPF intake in cardiovascular disease prevention. They pointed out that the prevalence of UPFs in Canada represents a widespread phenomenon that often occurs involuntarily due to their dominance in the food environment.

While public education and individual counseling are vital for health promotion, the researchers argued that these measures have limited effectiveness without comprehensive environmental and policy changes. Recommended interventions include food taxes, improved front-of-package labeling, marketing restrictions, and reformulation targets to enhance food quality.

However, some experts not involved in the study have raised concerns regarding its limitations and called for further research to definitively assess the relationship between UPFs and heart disease risk. Professor Kevin McConway, an emeritus professor of applied statistics at the Open University, stated that while the modeling approach is interesting, he would caution against placing too much confidence in its detailed estimates.
