Dr. Ayodeji Ogunleye, known as Dr. O, is a psychiatrist at River Bend Hospital, where he treats a range of mental health issues. He advocates for patients to seek help for mental health concerns just as they would for physical health issues.
"You have diabetes, you go see an endocrinologist; you have hypertension, you see a cardiologist. People need to understand that mental health deserves the same attention," Dr. O stated. He noted that increased advocacy for mental health has significantly contributed to awareness about these issues.
Dr. O emphasizes that while there is no one-size-fits-all solution to mental health, effective coping mechanisms are available. He suggests mindfulness and grounding techniques for those feeling anxious or losing control. However, he stresses that professional help is necessary for moderate to severe cases. "If you have a primary care doctor, talk to them. If you have a psychiatrist or mental health professional, reach out to them," he advised.
For anyone struggling with mental health challenges, the 988 Suicide Crisis Hotline is available for support.
