Researchers from VA San Diego found that higher levels of naturally occurring antibodies may help protect against depression and PTSD associated with TBI. In a study involving over 1,000 active duty Service members, those with the highest concentrations of anti-NMDAR1 autoantibodies exhibited 22% lower PTSD scores and 25% lower depression scores after sustaining a TBI. Additionally, these individuals had reduced use of psychotropic medications. The study suggests that these immune proteins could play a critical role in assessing and preventing mental health issues related to TBI.
In another study, VA Boston researchers developed an innovative web-based program aimed at promoting physical activity among Veterans with COPD. Participants in the 12-week program used a wearable pedometer to track their step counts and received personalized feedback and educational resources. Results indicated that participants increased their daily step count by an average of 1,410 steps compared to a control group, significantly moving many from underactive to active physical activity levels, which highlights the potential of technology-driven rehabilitation.
Lastly, researchers from the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago investigated a combined treatment using the cancer medication Pembrolizumab and the enzyme Arylsulfatase B for melanoma treatment. In tests on mice, this combination was found to enhance immune responses and reduce tumor invasiveness, indicating a synergistic effect that may improve melanoma treatment outcomes.
