
A recent study published in the journal Nature indicates that sleep duration may influence longevity. Researchers from Columbia University analyzed data from approximately 500,000 individuals who reported their sleep duration, including naps. The research compared reported sleep durations with 23 biological aging clocks, which assessed whether various bodily systems appeared biologically older or younger than the individual's actual age. Results revealed that both short and long sleep durations correlated with a higher biological age and increased risks for future diseases and all-cause mortality.
Specifically, women who slept between 6.5 and 7.8 hours and men who slept for 6.4 to 7.7 hours exhibited the lowest biological age gaps. The study showed significant connections between sleep duration and aging across multiple bodily systems including the brain, heart, immune system, and skin.
Furthermore, short sleep increased the relative risk for all-cause mortality by 50%, while longer sleep elevated this risk by about 40%. The researchers acknowledged limitations, such as relying on self-reported sleep data and the observational nature of the study, which does not establish causation.
Saema Tahir, a board-certified sleep medicine physician, commented that sleep is crucial for bodily repair mechanisms, including cellular restoration and immune regulation. Disruptions in sleep patterns can lead to physiological changes associated with accelerated aging.
Tahir emphasized that while a sleep range of six to eight hours may be a useful guideline, it should not be regarded as rigid, given individual differences in sleep needs based on age and health status. For some groups, like athletes or individuals recovering from illness, sleep requirements can differ significantly.
Ultimately, Tahir noted that achieving quality sleep is critical. Many individuals may sleep for several hours yet experience poor sleep quality—leading to similar or worse aging effects compared to those who get less sleep but of higher quality. She concluded that good-quality sleep is essential for healthy aging and should not be seen as a luxury but rather as a fundamental biological necessity.
