
A Marion man, Matthew Schleier, who was found not guilty by reason of insanity for strangling his son, is requesting a mental health evaluation from a doctor outside the Cherokee Mental Health Institute, where he is currently hospitalized. In August, a judge determined that Schleier would remain at the facility to monitor his behavior.

Recently, Schleier's legal team filed a court document seeking an independent examination from a Chicago doctor. The state of Iowa opposed this request, arguing that Schleier was only eligible for an outside examination during his initial hearing. In response, his legal team stated in a filing last week that it is extraordinary for the state to limit the court's access to crucial information related to the complex psychiatric and psychological issues involved in the case.
