Eunjin Tracyan, an assistant professor in the College of Education and Human Development, emphasizes the significance of synchronized daily activities. According to Tracyan, consistent wake, meal, work, social, and sleep times help align our internal body clocks, known as circadian rhythms. This synchronization is linked to improved health outcomes over time.
The study analyzed survey data from 67 older adults, of whom 37 had insomnia. Results indicated that those with insomnia reported higher levels of pain and depression compared to their peers without sleep issues. In contrast, participants who adhered to regular routines experienced lower levels of both physical discomfort and depressive symptoms.
Tracyan draws attention to the impact of external factors, such as social activities that disrupt sleep patterns, which can lead to a phenomenon known as social jet lag. This condition occurs when individuals have different sleep-wake schedules on weekends compared to weekdays, adversely affecting their circadian rhythms.
The findings suggest that establishing and maintaining daily routines can help mitigate the negative effects of disrupted sleep and promote better overall health. According to Tracyan, regular deep sleep is beneficial, while habits associated with being a night owl can pose health risks.
