University of Missouri researchers have found that maintaining a consistent daily routine can positively impact physical and mental health, particularly in older adults suffering from insomnia. According to the National Council on Aging, about half of adults aged 60 and older report experiencing insomnia symptoms. To explore the connection between insomnia and overall well-being, Tracy analyzed survey data from 67 older adults, including 37 with insomnia. The findings revealed that those with insomnia reported higher levels of pain and depression.

Tracy discovered that participants who adhered to a consistent daily schedule exhibited lower levels of pain and depression. She suggested that the synchronization of the body's internal clock, a process facilitated by regular routines, contributes to these improved outcomes. "Regardless of sleep quality, those who reported having a regular daily routine had lower levels of physical pain and less depression compared to those without a daily routine," said Tracy. She emphasized that consistent activity times, such as waking, eating, and sleeping, help align the body's circadian rhythm with daily life.

Proper regulation of the circadian rhythm leads to better bodily function, whereas disruptions can hinder overall performance. Tracy pointed out that even minor changes in daily schedules can lead to what is known as social jet lag, and maintaining routine through the week can alleviate this effect.

Tracy advocates for the health benefits of daily routines for individuals of all ages. She noted the growing awareness of social jet lag caused by differing sleep patterns on weekends. Her research aims to encourage a holistic view of health and well-being, considering the entire 24-hour cycle rather than focusing solely on waking hours.

The study titled "Behavioral-social rhythms and insomnia symptoms: associations with pain, body mass index, and depressive symptoms among older adults" was published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine.
